About

(Last updated 2007-06-17)
I’m a 23-year-old student at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. Before that, I grew up in Bedford, Virginia.

I have a B.S. in Mathematics, and I’m currently working an M.S. in Computer Science. I also work full-time for a cell phone service provider, doing software.

Here are a few of my favorite anime:Great Teacher Onizuka, Azumanga Daioh, Shoujo Kakumei Utena, Read Or Die, Haibane Renmei, Totoro, and Perfect Blue.

While I’d seen some occasional anime before, I first became a “fan” when I was a freshman in college (2002). Since then, however, I’ve watched…sort of a lot of anime. Actually, thanks to anidb, I have an almost complete list, with 1-10 ratings. For reasons not worth actually explaining, the scale is more like 3-10: 10-9 excellent, 8-7 good, 6-5 meh, 4- bad. I will re-normalize all the ratings some day.

Mostly due to conversations with my friend jpmeyer, a few years back I developed an interest in media criticism. By which I mean using big words to say simple things, like: Fight Club is really cool. That’s about 80% of where this blog came from. Nowadays, I kind of alternate between groping attempts at humor and sloppily written editorials. My biggest pet topic is probably the importance of media type and format to dramatic content. By which I mean the differences between, say, a story done in manga, done as a 26-episode anime series, and done as a live-action movie. Or similar. I am also interested in genre, and in cross-cultural concepts of gender and sexuality. I am also interested in MASSIVE PENETRATING BEAM ATTACKS and in gattai henshin hissatsu powered by HOT-BLOODED GUTS.

I want to learn Japanese, but I am afraid of taking classes, because of the high probability years of anime watching will make me sound like an idiot.

I have a love/hate relationship with 4chan. Somehow, that sentence should have been a rape joke. See what I mean?

I am probably incapable of taking myself seriously.
